Odds and Ends

🍥We have a few entertaining signs in our room.  Looking forward to more--per my last visit to China, they are all over.

🍥There are two phones in the rooms---one on a nightstand and one in the bathroom.  Twice in one day the phone in the bathroom rang.  One caller was another quarantiner asking about our quarantine and the other was the front desk.  As of yet, no calls since.  We're not sure why the bathroom phone rings when the one on the nightstand works--Tom has had to use it several times requesting more water, towels, toilet paper etc.

🍥One night our water was off for several hours.  We finally went to bed at midnight hoping we would have water in the morning.  Thankfully we did.  We don't know if that is a normal occurrence...

🍥I decorated!  In President Nelson's final address in April 2022 conference I felt an urgency of "now".  It was the only note I took on his talk.  "Now is the time we can learn.  Now is the time we can repent.  Now is the time we can bless others and 'lift up the hands which hang down'".  That has felt especially important while I've been in quarantine and not able to do my normal things.  There are still some things I can do!!  President Ballard said in April 2021 "Waiting upon the Lord does not imply biding one's time.  You should never feel like you are in a waiting room.  Waiting upon the Lord implies action."  Like I said in my earlier post, now, even while in quarantine, I can prepare to meet God.  It's been very important to me to not waste my time.  Even right now is very important.

🍥When we first moved down to room 1420, Tom overloaded an outlet and the breaker tripped.  He called the front desk, but he didn't know the Chinese vocabulary for that and whatever he said, they didn't understand.  So Jacky came to our rescue--as always!  Jacky called the hotel, the hotel sent Jacky a video as to how fix it ourselves since they can't come into our rooms and Jacky sent it to us.  So if you ever are in the Grand Soluxe in Changzhou and you trip a breaker, let us know, we can help.

🍥One day Tom was looking out the window and Greta was literally passing out our 'daily gum' and it flew out the window instead of hitting him.  Thankfully we have plenty of gum and we have well over a 'daily gum' quantity (But we still call it our 'daily gum'!).  My friend Julie said that the gum just wanted to get out of quarantine! Probably so.

🍥Our curious one needed to check out the LED lights.

🍥I've been making thank you cards to give to our health care professionals who check us everyday. While this one is on the door, I'll give each one of them one when we leave.

🍥Tom's sister Sally said that at least our girls are learning first hand that they don't ever want to commit a crime that would land them in jail!  True. They're pretty convinced it would not be a good time.

🍥I forgot to mention in my food post that with each meal we get some sort of soup.  This is the breakfast soup called congee.  They are mostly hot water with different floaties each time. Thank you, but pass.

🍥Twenty two days down!  Seven more to go!

🍥Thank you all for your thoughtful messages of support and messaging us saying you're praying for us or wishing to send us snacks.  It means so much! (And thankfully the wonderful Jacky arranged some way for us to get some snacks with dinner tonight.  He deserves way more than one gold star! If you do have extra prayers to offer up, the people in Shanghai have been in quarantine for more than 50 days, including Jacky.  Their lives are desperately needing to get more normalized. I know prayers can help!)

🍥Love to each of you from China!

Bamboo Forest

There is a bamboo forest nearby.  A few weeks ago we paid it a visit. It was about an hour drive and after we got off the freeway it was a meandering road through some cute villages.  I started getting excited for some hiking and a lovely nature experience. I should have known better.  This is China.  If people will come, they will find a way to make some money.  The bamboo forest was no different---it was a tourist trap. That didn't mean we didn't enjoy it.  We did. It was a lot of fun.  But our expectations were shot down yet again.  (Pro tip, Darcee, drop all expectations, you're in China!) At the bamboo forest, you can see shops,  get a hot dog at "Fatty Dogg WestCoast Hot Dog",  (perhaps I should try it, my expectations may be happily surprised; but I highly doubt it) get measured 3 times,   (in China, children's prices are determined by your height, not your age.  When we came to China, both girls were under 150cm so they...

Underarm Odor Census Notice

I just got this text message from Changzhou City. I can't quite imagine what an inspection would entail. (And to "enjoy" an inspection!) In a country where you can't buy deodorant, what would the treatment be?  I wish them well on their census efforts!

Dinner Guests

Before we moved to China, my dream life was to stay home and make dinner for my neighbors.  If asked of a place I'd like to travel, I would usually comment that I would rather have a kitchen remodel than seeing far away places.  That is because I have come to really enjoy having people over for dinner and a kitchen remodel would make that much easier on me--which I cared more about than seeing the world. (It also illustrates my extremely low need for adventure to be happy.) Thankfully I have been able to continue that hobby in China. It is a bit more of a challenge here because of an even smaller kitchen capacity, lack of ingredients and my concern about feeding Chinese people food they might actually like.  For my personal records here are dinners I have photos of. Tina and James (our liaison for our landlady) Sherry, Talia & Stella (Tom's co workers; and Stella tutors me in Chinese) Penny (one of my Chinese teachers) Melissa's cousin (someone from CCID branch asked ...
